Procedure:
Step 1: Start collecting green and brown waste
You will need to collect a sufficient quantity of green and brown waste for making the compost. Collect all the kitchen and garden waste over a few days to get started with your compost preparation.
Step 2: Make a mix of wet and dry waste
In the next step, you will need to mix all your wet and dry waste together. Wet waste from the kitchen shall include fruit and vegetable peels, rotten food, coffee grounds, used tea leaves, eggshells, and another kitchen scrap for that matter. Similarly, dry waste would include your garden waste such as plant clippings, dry leaves, bark chips, tree branches (shredded ones), hay, wood shavings, etc. You can also use cardboard and old newspapers for this activity.
Make a layer of dry waste followed by the wet waste. Ensure that the ratio of dry material to wet material is 3:1.
Step 3: Add water to the mixture
Water your mixture of green and wet waste and make it slightly moist. Don’t forget to cover the container with a lid. Ensure that the mixture is regularly sprinkled with a little amount of water. You will need to maintain its damp sponge consistency for better results.
Step 4: Stir the mixture
Stirring the mixture weekly is important to achieve its desired consistency and maintain its temperature from top to bottom of the container. It will also help in speeding up the process of composting and preventing the mixture from going bad or developing a foul odor.
Step 5: Be patient
With due care, it takes around 6 to 8 weeks for the compost to get ready and serve the purpose of soil enrichment. Sometimes, composting might even take a year provided if there is less effort. When your mixture of green and brown waste becomes dark brown and starts releasing an earthy smell, the process of composting is completed.
